Being the largest Spanish-built fort in the New World, Castillo San Cristóbal makes for an ideal historical setting and you may recognize it from the 2011 movie “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.” El Morro may be an even more iconic fort, which is why parts of the 1997 Steven Spielberg-directed film “Amistad” were shot there. As you walk between these locations and others, the guide will describe their cinematic significance. Named for Saint Christopher, the patron saint of travelers, the Spanish-built fort is a masterpiece of 18th-century military engineering and design. After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive at a popular venue for a folkloric performance that will highlight the traditional songs and dances of Puerto Rico. You can expect it to be an immensely entertaining, high-energy show.

After settling into your seat, the spectacle will begin with gusto. You will instantly recognize rhythms from other parts of the world that have influenced Puerto Rican music and dance. Many of the steps and sounds originated in Cuba, Brazil, the Dominican Republic and other Latin American countries.

You may notice African beats and a passion typically associated with Spain’s flamenco. The dancers will perform the mambo, which was invented in Havana in the 1930s, and the samba, a dance style from West Africa.

You will also enjoy parts of the show dedicated to La Plena, a genre of music and dance indigenous to Puerto Rico. Tambourines are the principal instruments in La Plena, although other instruments such as congas, trombones and guitars are often played.

In this folkloric show, the featured guitarist will be Juan Carlos, an entertainer that has traveled the world playing flamenco and singing in his distinct baritone voice.

Explore San Juan, a 500-year old city with an experienced group of cyclists, just steps from the harbor entrance to see the highlights of San Juan, from the historical capital building "El Capitolio" to a reef sheltered city. Commencing at the dock, tour guides will lead you to the historic capital building for a brief history of the island’s largest city.

El Yunque is the 3500' peak within Puerto Rico's Caribbean National Forest.  The name derives from the Indian word "Yuqui" meaning white land, but was changed by the Spanish to "Yunque" which means anvil.  When the peak is viewed from the north, it actually resembles an anvil (the iron block on which metal pieces are hammered).  

The rainforest, covering 28,000 acres, contains 75% of the virgin forests left in Puerto Rico.  The entire area is a bird sanctuary and holds claim to being the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System.  Thanks to receiving 100 billion gallons of rain per year, the forest is able to sustain some 250 species of trees, 50 types of ferns and as many as 20 varieties of wild orchids.  In addition to the flora and fauna, El Yunque is also home to an array of Puerto Rican wildlife.

El Yunque is home to a variety of local Puerto Rican wildlife, but perhaps the most famous would be the Amazona Uttata and the Coquí (Ko-kee).  The former is better known as the Puerto Rican Parrot.  It is an endangered species, very near extinction, so to see this red, blue and green beauty is a rare treat.  The latter, El Coquí, is not only the national mascot, but also a source of national pride.  Growing to be only ¼" to 1" in size, it gets his name from the cricket-like mating call that literally sings his name, Co-Qui-i-i-i!  Exclusive to Puerto Rico, they can be found in great numbers throughout the island.  However, even though the Puerto Rican tree frog can be easily heard, he can be difficult (though not impossible) to find!

Within the forest, there are many trees known to be over 1000 years old.  There is the Tabonuco forest with trees reaching heights in excess of 100'.  The Colorado forest contains the short, gnarled trees with hollowed trunks.  Sierra Palms with their unusual yet distinctive root systems grow in abundance, as do the huge tropical ferns (some ferns grow over 40' tall).  There are also giant hardwoods and bamboo groves in this "nature wonderland".

Your visit includes a stop at a bakery after approx. 45 minutes-ride by bus where guests will enjoy a coffee or hot chocolate and a local quesito (cheese pastry) or other delicacy; ; a visit to El Portal Visitor's Center; a stop at Yokahú Tower which commands a view of the entire northeast coast of Puerto Rico; a photo

stop at beautiful Coca Falls, and a walk along the Angelito Trail with time for an optional refreshing dip.

Coffee is an important part of Puerto Rico's history, once grown in all towns throughout the island. Still a popular Puerto Rican product, the island has experienced a new found focus on growing quality coffee.

You will have the opportunity to visit a lovely working Coffee Plantation, only 45 minutes from the ship, in the town of San Lorenzo. Upon arrival at the plantation, your lively guide will welcome you and take you on a guided walk through the hillside plantation during which you will learn of the history of coffee in Puerto Rico.

Fort San Cristobal

Upon disembarkation, meet your experienced guide who will lead you through the historical Old City including a visit to Fort San Cristobal, a fortification that successfully defended the old city from attack by the British and Dutch in centuries gone by.

Next, walk into the City through one of the side streets and commence on a stroll through history. Getting just off the beaten track offers some fascinating finds that eludes most visitors that never leave the main streets.

La Plazoleta de la Rogativa

Exit the gardens of Casa Blanca through a partially hidden access to Calle Sol, or the Street of the Sun. After making the tight descending turn downwards, you suddenly find yourself in the most beautiful section of the entire old city - the Plaza of the Procession. Dominating this little park area is a statue commemorating the miraculous saving of the old city from sacking by the British in the 16th century.

This vantage point offers views of the Governor's Mansion, the El Cañuelo fortress across the port entrance and the Bacardi distillery. A short walk down hill through San Juan Gate takes you to the water's edge. As you return through the San Juan gate continue to San Juan Cathedral, retracing the steps of the original conquistadores. Your guide will walk you to the corner of Cristo & Fortaleza Streets; at this point you decide if you wish to have the guide escort you back to the ship or if you wish to stay to explore the many boutiques and shops that line the cobblestone streets of the old city and return to the ship at your leisure.
